THE STORM FINALLY ENDS
December 21, 2006
The below shots were taken on a hike in which I walked from my apartment on Kipling and Mississippi over to Union and Mississippi using ruts on the roads as my guides. Walk took about an hour one-way as a lot of time was spent conversing with people about this historic storm! I met my lady at the house she was sitting and she returned home with me on foot again.
At our apartment, we measured 25 inches of snow with drifts 4 and 5 feet high. All the highways east of the Front Range were closed at some point during the storm (I-70, I-25, I-76, etc). Denver International Airport was also closed from Wednesday through Friday. My campus was shut down for three days (Wed-Fri) and Denver Public Schools were also closed for a few days (something that has happened only once since I've lived here - Blizzard of '03).
To compare to the March 2003 Blizzard in which we had 35 inches of snow, this storm obviously didn't accumulate the amounts of snow that storm did, but its effect was much larger in terms of area covered by heavy snow. The '03 blizzard was mainly a front range storm; this blizzard took on the entire eastern plains! Winds were a huge issue with this storm as well which was shown in the drifts not only here in the metro area, but on the plains as well!
