A very scenic chase trip which brought me back to Colorado!

This was kind of my half-assed attempt at chasing. The day before, I had driven all the way out to Topeka, Kansas to retrieve my van after getting her transmission rebuilt. I was to return home on this day and fortunately there was a moderate risk for severe weather along my route home. I left Topeka for Hays where I headed north into extreme Southern Nebraska where I attemped to intercept some storms that were forming ahead of the main line. None of those storms survived and I turned my attention to the tornado-warned storm coming out of Sterling. At this point, I had admitted defeat as I knew I had two hours before I could make that storm. None-the-less, I hurried south to I-70 in Colby and blasted west to the CO/KS border where I caught up with the weakening storm. By then, the main show was over, so I settled with some scenic shots before continuing west for home.

What SPC was forecasting to be sitting between me in Topeka and getting home to Denver; this graphic issued as their second Day 2 the day before the event.

Sitting at a great, shadey wifi spot at a cheapo hotel in Phillipsburg, Kansas with my recently reaquired van and its new transmission.

The storms near McCook went up and quickly weakened. I abandoned the hopes up there in favor of making an intercept on the way home.

One of several daytime lightning shots I nabbed from the side of I-70 just inside the Colorado state line.

A couple more daytime shots from I-70. These were shot on 2 second exposures to give you an idea of the luck involved.

Mammatus at sunset.

More incredible mammatus!

The view through my windshield as I headed west back home.
