A rather low-key chase day in New Mexico. |
|
We left Enid, Oklahoma and shot back across the Oklahoma Panhandle into Northeast New Mexico where we basically chased crap. We ventured out of Clayton and headed southwest on US Hwy 56 to NM-120 where we ran along the outskirts of the storm's core. We had several very close CGs which kept the radios quiet til we reached the "town" of Roy and met briefly with Weathervine and others. We then scurried north up NM-39 into Abbott where we thought of our next move. We elected to try and chase down storms to the north along the border and did this using what was suppose to be a paved state road (NM-193). Mapquest later shows the unpaved sections, but Delmore didn't. We enjoyed a few miles of smooth pavement before the road quickly deteriorated into a rocky, torn asphault, and dirt with huge divits. Cows slept in the road, dogs chased our vehicles, and the fishtailing through mud kept us on our toes until we reached US Hwy 64 and headed into Raton for dinner and lodging at the Oasis.

The storm as we approach it from Clayton on NM-120.

NM-193 after the pavement ends. This was the best of the non-paved conditions, but cows made this a venture!

Following the light back to the pavement!

Who says you can't off-road in a 4-banger! The Storm Tracer needs a bath after it's off-roading adventures!
