A distant tornado on a busy day in Texas. |
|
My first venture onto the Texas Caprock; Amos Magliocco gives us the grand tour of the area as we chase a tornatic supercell across the Caprock. The title of this log comes from Star Trek 2 where Kirk explains the no-win situation which is presented to Star Trek officers. Well, it was really a no win; either you scored the big tornado and lost windows on your cars or you stayed a safe distance, kept all your glass, but were in a horrible viewing position. We (think) we saw a pair of tornadoes today; both with horrible contrast which makes them very hard to spot in the videos. The landscape was almost as breath-taking as the storm itself! We had crazy times dancing around the core, trying to aid chasers who got stuck, and enjoyed post-chase laughs in Childress as a tornatic MCS rolled over town for a couple hours after the chase.

Organized wall cloud that just wouldn't produce.

Almost there!

Scott's Baron system showing the rotation directly to our north and west.

Fortunately this was about as big as I ran into. Thanks to Jason Montano who got stuck and was the reason I stayed behind. The core that passed over the road dropped baseballs. We got a few golfballs in this area.

Rotation overhead moves into the field to give way to this scene.

Scott Eubanks checks out the storm.

A later video review shows the tornado buried in the rain. I was aiming at this area of the storm for several minutes.
This image was changed with photoshop to bring out the low contrast tornado. I did see this visually and alerted the gang to my find.
