Quick Lunchtime Update

Warming up fast across the metro area with temperatures in the mid 70s.  I went for 80 today, so hopefully it verifies.  Record for today is 81 which as of 1pm, is holding by 6 degrees.

The 12z NAM and GFS models came in earlier this morning and unfortunately the GFS did little to save the NAM.  A lot of doubt has been cast over this setup and it remains in question whether any chase opperations will come of it.  The next one not too far behind it moves into the plains in the 5th-6th timeframe and right now looks better than this upcoming system.  It doesn’t have the fanfare to it that this one did mainly cause it comes on a Monday and hoses a lot of people’s schedules (except mine, I’m off Sunday-Wednesday).

I think a decision on Thursday/Friday will come later tomorrow if not early Thursday morning, but I am going to maintain the plans to chase it and will play it off as so until I hear otherwise.  I am not driving this particular chase as I’ll be jumping in with Scott, so its ultimately his call.  If things fall apart before that, I’ll decide whether I think its worth the thousand miles on the van to go.

Wrapping things up here on campus for a station shift which hopefully follows up with a couple more hours here on campus later.  That’ll shorten my day tomorrow and allow me the rest of the week off for whatever it holds.

Wrapping Up Studio, Photo Trip Coming

I am wrapping up my work here at the 7News studios as we’re in extended coverage until 8am.  Once we wrap up the show, I will head out via a long way home to shoot some photos on my way home.  Since I am doing some work-from-home for the station this afternoon, I will probably upload the gallery and write up a full report on this storm during that time, so other than a couple mobile posts, I probably won’t have a full update again til later this afternoon as I am going to catch a few hours of snooze before getting back to work.

Morning Commute Video

While its not the most excited video on earth, I have uploaded my video I took from my 3am drive into the 7News studios this morning.  You can view it here with license information or just hit play below!

I should have a couple good air-checks to add later as some of my video was used on the morning show as well as a fun cameo with Meteorologist Lisa Hidalgo outside when we engadged in some friendly snowball fire!  I’ll have that up later today!

I plan to head out from here between 8 and 9 and do some photography along my route home to which I’ll create a photo gallery covering this event.  I’ve been informed that accumulations at my apartment have hit the 9″ mark, but radar showing the northern edge of the snow moving near the Boulder-to-Brighton line, so I don’t anticipate adding much more beyond that.

Snow Winding Down, Auraria Campus Closed

The brunt of the snow has pushed into southeast Colorado and has left the northern Front Range with flurries which should remain through about lunchtime before it ends and skies start to clear.  Models hint at some sunshine later in the afternoon, so this will clear out as fast as it moved in.

About 20 minutes ago, I received word that the Auraria Campus was closed for today, so when I leave the station after the morning show, I will head out to shoot some photographs of the snow as the snow has made for some very pretty scenes.  Meanwhile, I am rendering my morning commute video I took on my way in this morning and should have it uploaded later this morning.

This storm probably won’t make my 10″ threshold, but given its impact and the insane snow rates that occured at the onset of the storm, I will create a log including the photo gallery and the (currently) four video packages I shot during this storm the documents it basically from start-to-finish.  Currently, I have three videos online covering the storm yesterday from the graupel storm that brought in the storm to late night shots from up north when I got home.

More later as totals continue to roll in and of course when I make my way out when the sun comes up to shoot the more scenic side of this quick and hard-hitting storm!

Snowstorm First Day Update, 8" So Far

Snow continues to fall at about 1-inch per hour across parts of Denver with my snow total here in Westminster sitting at 8″ with a light-to-moderate snow falling.  Radar indicates a break in the heavier snow as a drier area is cutting in from the north into my area and moving southward.  Snow should continue at least light-to-moderate through the night easily surpassing the 10″ threshold for my reports page and likely overshooting a foot by morning.

Below is the video I promised earlier covering my ride back to Westminster.  I just posted it so you can check it out here.

I do intend to try for a short nap before heading back out to document the morning rush hour which oughta be very light considering half the school districts around Denver have already closed including Denver Public, Littleton Public, and Jefferson County (a rarity all on its own).  Also worth noting was the 15,000 plus people across Denver without power.  In fact, the buildings across the street from ours were without power for about an hour and came back on within the last 30 minutes.

I broke out the camera during my pre-sunset adventure and figure to go nuts tomorrow when the sun rises in the morning.  Here are are a few photos from earlier this evening.

A fun shot of the wind-driven snow and ice attaching to my antennas.
