My good friend and chase partner, Jon Van de Grift, is launching his new website, Perilous Planet, this evening here in Denver. Sadly, we've been very excited at his release as we'll get a chance to see some amazing photography. It goes live tomorrow night just in time for Trick-or-Treating, and I hunch it'll be quite the treat! Stay tuned for a link and more pictures later.

Bottom of the 7th with 1 out and the Rox down by 2 runs in the game and in need of a sweep of the next 4 games to win the World Series. While not likely, its certainly not out of the realm of possibility, and with this team, you don't say they're done until the last out is recorded. They still have 8 outs left. My Redskins, to be honest, I had counted them out early in the week going against the Patriots today. I was figuring that attitude going in would only earn me happy surprise if they won and a rather "bleh" attitude if they lost. Fortunately we only let them score 52 points to our 7, so it wasn't as bad as it could be (insert sarcastic tone here). Needless to say, this weekend certainly didn't do much to lift my sporting spirits. My only saving grace is my hometown Buckeye remain in the number 1 spot in the BCS.

With the apartment returned to livable minus the lack of a sink and cabinet in the bathroom, we moved back in and spent most of the weekend restoring the order to which was chaos for most of the week. In the midst of that restore, I transformed my van from chase season to winter season; pulling out the chase-specific radios, jotto desk, amplifiers, and other chase goodies to make room for the cold-weather gear. I feel the time has come to close the book on 2007 and get settled for winter as we approach Halloween.

And I think its probably safe to close the book on the World Series as the Sox just raked a homer on the first pitch of the 8th which wipes out the homer the Rockies pulled off in the last inning. I know I said not to give up hope, but reality is a buzzkill. I'm still watching the game, which means I haven't totally given up, but how much can they do?

So a couple books will close today, mine being the 2007 storm chase season. All that remains are final website updates and preparations for the upcoming 2008 season. In the meantime, so real-life stuff to do, including a needed non-chase vacation over the holidays! Obviously winter weather events will be the main focus, and thus the blog will not die. And of course, my usual ramblings of weather, chasing, or whatever! Stay tuned for other interesting news and other goodies as I try to keep you all around til the next season!

My E-470 statement arrived today and I got a good laugh out of my trip back on October 13 in the hailstorm in Aurora. In the 90 minutes I was running around, I ran up $17.25 in tolls on E-470. As I said in my log, I've done better in Blackjack! LOL

I updated the log with the image. Nothing too special! Just good for another laugh!

Nothing new or exciting on the weather front that bears any real attention, but I had to post a segment from an AFD out of Greenville/Spartanburg, South Carolina which was brought to my attention in a Facebook post by Melissa Moon (how's that for the world's longest sentence)..

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...

IN ALL HONESTY...IT/S POSSIBLE THAT AN ORANGUTAN WITH A DARTBOARD COULD PROVIDE JUST AS PLAUSIBLE A FORECAST FOR THE LATTER HALF OF THE WEEK AS I CAN.

Yeah, sometimes its just not that easy... Hahahaha!

With my weekend swallowed up by the broken pipe in my apartment, there wasn't time for anything else, including sleep. However, we did see our first snow in Denver on Sunday with most falling between 8am and 10am Sunday morning. Skies cleared later in the day and the two inches we saw were mostly gone by evening. It was certainly nice to feel cold temperatures again!

After last week's bust and no weather-maker in the near future, SDS has kicked in and the annual bickering among chasers has begun in the forums. Bad driving and storm chasing elite are the two topics of discussion which have been rehashed from previous arguements. I don't have much to say on either except the following..

There are idiots all over the roads in everyday life. In fact, I watched a yuppie in his big-ass SUV make a right turn in front of an oncoming fire truck with sirens blazing and lights flashing. It wasn't a close accident by any means, but the fire truck blared its horn as it went through the intersection having to slow down for the turning truck. Basically, it was like he was trying to beat a train. Funny enough, I caught up with him at the next light to prove exactly how much time he saved. Point being, we can bitch to our heart's content about the idiots on the road. Unfortunately it gets amplified while chasing because everyone is so gung-ho on making chasers look good. There are bad apples everywhere, and while you're going to get upset when some Top Gun hotshot does something retarded that nearly lands all involved in the hospital, in reality, there's nothing much we can do. Be a defensive driver and keep your head on a swivel. Most of us do it well enough in the unpredictability of severe weather; why not do it well enough with the unpredictability of the idiots on the road? Oh, and yes, I've sped at one point or another... just like every other chaser who's driven a car. That's probably the biggest defense I've heard from all these threads. The truth is, its the wrecklessness of idiots everyone's bitching about. Not the speeding! Yes, its illegal, but its a highly common occurance while chasing. Running stop signs, parking in the middle of the road, setting up tripods in the street (and yes, I am looking forward to mowing down someone's very expensive camera), the "groupies" of various organizations, the various organizations and tour groups, etc. That's what the big issues is. Unfortunately, I don't see those practices ending anytime soon, so its hardly worth making a fuss about it more than once (this is my once).

Now on to the elite topic. Get over it! Who cares who's doing what? This argument is so old and ridiculous. No one owes anybody anything; and truthfully, with the whining and bitching that's going on, who can blame them for not wanting anything to do with them! Chasing is about personality IMO, and if people like your company, they'll chase with you. It has nothing to do with elitism! Its about having fun out there! I was new once... never heard me bitching cause the big kids didn't let me sit at their table. Obviously now I'm chasing with some of the best people to be with, not only for chasing, but because of how fun they are when we're all out there! And I certainly haven't tried to make people like me; I do my thing (my jerseys, my Goombas, my dorky quirks, and the fact I shoot video for news media). It's who I am and people dig that (as to why, I really don't know -LOL-). Point being, just go out and have fun! If people want to chase with you, they will! This elite crap is a worthless arguement and a giant waste of time! Grow up and have fun! If people want to go off on their own with a group of people they ENJOY chasing with, so be it! Don't be a baby and cry about it.

So those are my thoughts on both of those topics. After the weekend I had dealing with the flood in my apartment which forced myself, my lady, and three cats into a hotel room for three nights and counting, I just wanted to vent. I feel better! Now I'm off to go be an elite bad driver on the internet in hopes I can score World Series tickets!

Smile everyone! Winter's coming which means everyone can CHILL OUT!! :o)

My plans to clear out my van are on hold when a pipe under our apartment burst on Friday leaving a couple inches of water in our bathroom. The situation got worse overnight as the water, which is coming from under the floor, seeped under the carpets into the hallways as well as into the kitchen. Our landlord and apartment management has been very good with us in getting the situation into terms easier to handle. Right now, my lady, three cats, and myself are hunkered down for the weekend in a double queen room at the Lakewood Best Western. That's where we'll be living until we can return home. Fortunately, the flood is limited to the bathroom and kitchen, which means we haven't suffered any damage to our valuables. Most of the damage is limited to apartment items which are being repaired or replaced at no cost to us, thus we're fortunate in that regards. Obviously the inconvienience of being stuck in a hotel with our two kittens and their momma leaves a bit to be desired. Certainly not how I was hoping to spend my weekend.

In other, more weather-related news, our first snow for Denver is expected overnight tonight into tomorrow. With the recent indian-summer and the warmth of the ground, I'm not expecting much to remain on the ground even as it could amount to several inches. Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for the high country, so heavier amounts will fall elsewhere. I'm curious to see if we can muster a dusting over grassy areas as tomorrow's highs won't make it out of the 30s.

So a few things are on hold until we can return to our homestead. They're hopeful to have us back in by Monday evening, but my guess is that's likely not going to be the case as they have a lot of work to do which includes digging up the concrete in the bathroom to get to the broken pipe. I will be quite amazed if they pull that off.

Back home and at work after returning yesterday evening from our 1500 plus mile bust in Oklahoma. The choice to not chase Thursday was a good one considering my target sat in Illinois and would've missed out on most of the tornadoes. Not to mention storm speeds and of course the massive haul back. No complaints on coming home yesterday.

As I said earlier this week, my chasing season is probably over, and with more certainty, I think its more true now as we're now approaching the end of October. In fact, we're expecting our first snow here in Denver on Sunday with this next system sweeping through. A lot of cold air from the north coming down with it, so we're expecting temps to drop enough to support a few inches of snow at lower elevations. We'll see how that all pans out, but that's usually a pretty good sign of the end of the chasing season for me.

If a monster outbreak appears possible in the off-season, pending what hoops need to be jumped through, I may catch a flight the morning of and chase. This would definitely be true if this were in or around Ohio, my old stomping grounds. Otherwise, I will dismantle the van this weekend and pack up the gear for the season. Sitting just shy of 34,000 miles after cranking out 1,559 mile on this run, my tenth chase of 1,000 plus miles this season and my 57th chase overall this season which was the FIRST in Oklahoma outside the panhandle.

My chase log will be up shortly, and I'll post it here when it does go live. In the meantime, cranking out the final pieces of the Storms of 2007 chapter I am doing and am eager to wrap up production on that to make way for my many other projects which are looming large. The charity DVD is due out on November 15 and more information can be accessed by clicking here.

Sitting at the Days Inn in Newton, KS after a chicken fried steak dinner at Charlie's truck stop (my 2nd time eating at this wonderful place this season). Today was a moderate risk that busted pretty bad. We ended up in Norman, Oklahoma where we intercepted the southern cell in a chain of pearls in what looked to be a promising venture. What we're thinking was lack of instability was the main reason these storms never did much. We followed them around OKC narrowly beating out rush hour traffic, then trekked them along I-44 for quite some time before calling it a day at sunset. Before stabbing the fork, we ran into several chasers along the way, including Amos Magliocco and Al Moller.

We returned up through Wichita where we rest now before tomorrow's drive back home in what's sure to be a very windy trip back west on I-70. While it wa most definitely a bust, it was more than nice to just get out again! Mega thanks to Tim for opening an extra seat for me!

More pictures and a chase log to come very soon!

Topping off at Love's in Norman, OK. Initiation underway to our west with storms rapidly forming and hauling northeast at over 50kts.

Ready to go. Tornado watches already up and a second, even bigger show expected later. Our play between Okla City and Wichita Falls, TX. Just crossed into Oklahoma on I-35. Sadly, the first major chase in this state outside of the panhandle.

After a crazy morning of coordination and everything else related to running around like a chicken with your head cut off, I have sprung myself free and will be chasing tomorrow's MODERATE RISK in Oklahoma. I will be heading out with Tim this evening as soon as I get home, get out of my snazzy shirt and Snoopy tie, and get my gear thrown into a bag. I'm laughing at yesterday morning's blog post where I said how I wasn't going to go after anything unless it looked hands down good. Well, the hands are down! I'm going green! See you in the field one more time...

Okay.. so perhaps I will get into the plains one more time... perhaps tomorrow! Still working out the details and throwing out plans to get out and back as quickly as possible, so stay tuned through the day. Without question, one of the craziest chases of the season is in the works right now!

I have uploaded the chase log from Saturday's hail run in Aurora. You can view that by clicking here. I have also uploaded a gallery page covering the log. This includes all photos I shot during the chase. That is linked from the log and log pages and can also be viewed separately by clicking here.

As talked about earlier today, I have been playing with the idea of uploading galleries for my various chase logs which would include various information about the photos, including day and time shot, along with camera specifics including lens, focal length, and exposure time. I have done this using Adobe Lightroom and will be doing this with various logs in which I took a lot of photos. Since the Saturday chase was more of a test for this, it's going up. Normally a log like this would not have a gallery associated with it. I may update a few older logs from this year with a gallery, but am still working out the design. This will become a normal feature to selected chase logs starting in 2008. I may also update my current online galleries with this template as well.

Basic stats were updated and the chase log list has been updated to include the last few chases in September surrounding my lightning project. Because of the sensitivty of the project, there are no posted logs from those days; they are listed to include my mileage and other travel-related stuff. All mileage is up-to-date and everything should now be correct.

More updates will continue in time, but the gallery was the big addition. I'll post links here as more go up.

Staying at home in Denver watching sports definitely turned out to be the best choice as the squall line in Oklahoma didn't do anything I am sorry I missed. A brief, weak, and very small tornado was spotted by a few chasers, but that was the extent of things as the storms quickly evolved into a line and trekked east across the state. My hunch is I did just as well on Saturday with only 150 miles at cost plus the nearly $20 in tolls driving up and down E-470.

I'm keeping my eyes peeled for Wednesday, but at this point have no plans to make that trip. Its getting late enough into October where these systems are going to be hard pressed to do anything exciting. My chasing distance is shrinking by the day and it'll have to be a hands-down great setup, or something within a few hours for me to venture out. In all likelihood, I probably will not hit the plains again for any chasing until 2008.

With that, I intend to take some time this weekend to dismantle the van; pack away the chase gear, and perhaps do some cleaning and get her ready for the winter. I'll leave the gear inside and ready to go if something crazy does happen, but for the most part, I think its safe to call it a year.

I have to complete the updates and stats for my website here in the coming days. I am sitting close to 33,000 miles officially for the season with over 40,000 miles total if you include the various trips to Arizona during my 5-week lightning project. Its certainly been an amazing year that I hope has a similar amount of chasing in store for 2008.

Summaries, updated stats, pictures, videos, and other goodies are all on tap over the next few months. I am also planning a renovation of my storm chase logs for the 2008 season which will gear more toward photography with photo-specific information. Stay tuned for more on that as well!

In the meantime, I'll be keeping an eye on the weather in the event some crazy setup does evolve. Otherwise the site will shift into winter weather season as we await the first snowfall here in the metro area. The mountains took a wallop this weekend, so time will tell when we will see our first flakes down here!

So we took the fork out... storms fired near Castle Rock and drifted northeast grabbing the attention of most Denver-based chasers. I was out making the purchase of my new Nikkor 18-200mm VR lens when my phone exploded with calls and texts of the storms showing TVS and meso signatures. The storms never amounted to much as they weakened as they hit towards I-70. I left Lakewood for I-25 and bounced south to E-470 where I elected to take the easy storm moving up along E-470. I got in behind it and flew into the core about E-470 between Smokey Hill and Quincy getting hammered with a ton of hail up to penny-sized which covered the roads and made for some interesting driving. I followed the core to I-76 and returned south to intercept more storms. I eventually ended up on I-70 in Bennett before calling it a successful local day.

The photos were of course taken with the new 18-200mm lens, including the one below which was the scene of a nasty accident resulting from the accumulation of hail over the highway. A pickup truck and a jeep collided and the pickup ended up taking out the Quincy exit sign.

More photos and video later! My ventures in the hail today will be aired tonight on 7News's 10pm newscast.

I think I've lost all faith in today for my NW Kansas target... the main issue screaming at me right now is the cloud cover, not to mention it looks as if the SFC low is already sitting over central Kansas as evident in SFC wind flow out of the north in eastern Colorado. SW Kansas looks like the best play ATTM, but I'm sitting on the edge of too late from here in Denver for that or even a straight shot out I-70 for Hays and points east. It looks as if a secondary low is tying to form along the CO/NM border where SFC pressure is a bit lower and there are a couple obs showing a weak cyclone in the region. Whether that will amount to anything to swing around the winds in Kansas, I don't know. None-the-less, I think I am going to make a last second back out and bag the day before it begins... a shame! As Verne said, stick a fork in yet another one.

As for tomorrow, not figuring on chasing with all the sporting events going on, not to mention the lack of confidence in anything other than a fast moving squall line. I also am pretty sure that any isolated storms which do form will be hauling at unGodly speeds to the northeast, so it'll be a wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am type of chase. Not something worth while for a setup that far away. It looks as if the whole weekend is going to be bagged.

Such is chasing in October.. oh yeah.. there's a Winter Storm Watch in effect for the foothills and mountains west of Denver. The winter weather season is about to begin.

Getting my gear together for today's venture which looks to be sitting in NW Kansas. I'm wrapping up my final details and figure to be on the road by noonish heading out I-70 to Goodland and will adjust from there. I'm thinking its possible we end up as far east as Hays, but initially, I think a Goodland to Oakley line and points north is probably pretty good. My next update should be from the road. Off to finish getting my gear together for what will be the first chase for the #81 Lubacca jersey.

Sitting through the bottom of the 10th of the Rockies game which worked nicely as the new Day 1/Day 2s have come out. Tomorrow looks like it'll be the pick of the litter as Sunday is looking more like a fast moving storms on a cold front setup. With that in mind, I am considering doing tomorrow as my only chase and letting Sunday evolve a bit before making a final call on it. All indications at present show a chase on Sunday ending along and east of I-35 which will make for a haul coming back Sunday night.

As for tomorrow, areas near the surface low look primed for severe storm development. I think a target of Goodland and being there before 5pm CDT would be a safe assumption. That would mean a noon departure from Denver which allow for a good look at things tomorrow morning. As with most SPC outlooks, I hunch this one is a bit overdone (30% hatched hail and 5% tornado), so I wouldn't be surprised to see those porbs drop by the 1630z outlook. However, models have hinted at good parameters coming into play tomorrow, so perhaps those probs are warrented. I think with the dynamics in place and the cooler air associated with the system, capping should weaken to give us a couple hours of storm chase before dark. As Verne mentioned in an earlier email, moisture return is already in progress with dews in the mid 50s over much of the region. If those can hold, particularly along the warm front near the low along the KS/CO border, we should see good storms.

At this point, starting the 11th inning, I am a go for tomorrow. I am charging a few batteries tonight and will clear the van and setup in the morning before heading out about noon. I certainly don't think there is any hurry to race to Goodland tomorrow, so we can assemble ourselves accordingly for whatever we decide to do. In the meantime, I'm hopeful this game ends quickly resulting in the Rockies going up 2-0 so I can get some shut-eye before tomorrow.

The models continue to show a good system rolling through the plains over the weekend and the consistancy of this pattern is encouraging for a weekend chase. This time last week, hope was definitely in existance, but faultering. Not so much faultering now on a system which looks better that last week's. Without committing myself to a weekend roll, I am certainly preparing for at least one of the two weekens days to be on the road.

It is October, the Rockies are in the NLCS, and my Redskins have a winning record... all that meaning anything can happen in this magical month. My biggest problem will be whether to listen to/watch the Redskins game or the Rockies game on Sunday (I think they're at different times anyway). LOL

Stay tuned...

"Play it again, Sam..."

If someone can tell me from which M*A*S*H episode I am referring to, I'll give you a gold star!

As usual with my mindless babble, there is a reason. Once again, eyes are focused on the weekend for yet another chance to chase. After last week's big disappointment and the fun weekend I had at home, I'm very skeptical about jumping on the bus for this. Not to mention my presentation for St. Anthony's hospital on Friday morning which has most of my focus at this time. However, being that its a weekend, its something I'll keep my eyes and ears open to and will start to make better, more in depth guesses, wishes, and dreams later in the week.

In the meantime, and assuming there to be no more chasing this season, I am starting work on my 2007 Season Summary which will include stats, best of, and all that fun statistical stuff I contemplate in my mind. Stay tuned for that coming later this month.

Sporting events took over the weather as what were once promising forecasts went to crap and then some leaving me sitting in Denver for a weekend where I was hoping to chase. Things went downhill on Friday and never regrouped at all. I made morning efforts to salvage some type of forecast Saturday and today, but there was nothing to wish for. With that, I made the best of the time and got a load of stuff done here at home.

For what its worth, it was a great sports weekend. First and foremost, my Redskins blew up the Lions today shortly before the Broncos got annihilated by the Chargers which should slap realism into fans who thought the Broncos had a shot at anything this year. After two rather pathetic victories, they have now shown they really aren't that great. Fortunately the Rockies baseball team who swept the Phillies this weekend have taken the heat away from the Donkeys and have made for some great excitement in baseball! They'll take on Arizona in the NLCS this coming week and hopefully win out that series and head to the World Series! The Rockies are long overdue, and God only knows Helton deserves one!

So that was the weekend in a nutshell! Certainly turned out well considering everything was a backup plan to what I was hoping to be chasing. No complaints! Maybe next go around!

Still in Denver and look to remain so with no chasing today. Travel for tomorrow remains in the cards, but it still relatively uncertain at this time. Regardless, I am working a half day before I go to get some minor work done on the van in preparation for chasing this weekend. Sunday has returned to form as the focus of the weekend and a preliminary target is sitting in the northern TX Panhandle into SW Kansas where some interesting features are coming together on the models. Good shear and instability along with decent moisture along a dryline look to make Sunday a worthy goal. Obviously this is far from certain as today was once looking like da bomb. Pending this afternoon's runs for tomorrow, I will determine the best course of action for that. But so long as Sunday remains on the radar, I'll probably work from there. If Saturday holds any day-before-the-day potential along the way to Sunday's target, I'll chase tomorrow just because.

More later...

The 12z runs sucked a lot of life out of tomorrow's hope and have left me back in a holding pattern which is leaning more towards not chasing tomorrow. Too much uncertainty combined with the 700 plus miles to the target means leaving very early in the morning without having a good shot at looking at more. If I could get away with a closer target, something I could leave for mid-morning, I'd be a bit more inclined to jump, but with the uncertainties, I'd be putting my eggs in one basket and could be more than halfway there before its too late. With that, unless something changes my mind, tomorrow will not be a chase day.

Still keeping tabs on the rest of the weekend as targets should shift closer to home for Saturday and Sunday. Sunday, which looked to be the more promising day, has fallen out of good faith in the latest runs, so that'll bear watching as well. What looked like a very promising and active weekend it slowly losing pep.. I hope there's something to get out for this weekend! Not to mention the new jerseys will arrive today and they certainly could use a quick break-in!

Stay tuned... bleh!

Chase potential remains high this weekend and this trip may kick off as early as tonight. Models continue to point towards an interesting setup Friday, Saturday, and potentially Sunday. A long drive to Friday's target with a chance to chase basically the same areas on Saturday before returning for the potential cold core setup on Sunday. The incoming system is varied in speeds through the various models and timing will be the biggest question. Friday has strong potential to be a potentially strong day if the various parameters can fall into place at the right time. Capping is the big concern as usual, but if the timing of an upper level impulse is right, we could see the cap break and storms go up in a beautifully sheared enviornment with the potential for strong tornadoes as talked about by SPC in their 30%-hatched Day 2. It is a long haul as a preliminary target would be sitting in or around Aberdeen, South Dakota which is over 700 miles one way. Driving to North Platte tonight (approx. 3.5 hours) would cut Friday's drive to less than 450 miles and puts us is position for targets south in the case potential opens up a bit more in southern South Dakota into Nebraska.

Lots of questions surrounding this weekend setup which will have to be worked out, but the lengthy trip to an Aberdeen target would make for a commitment much earlier than one would like. I have already cleared my schedule for tomorrow and can be on the road anytime after 6:00 this evening if so choosen. If a couple local chasers are able to leave this evening as well, I'll load them up and head up!

Stay tuned...

We know... we're all nerds! What am I talking about? The group in our little storm chasing email list which competes to send the first email of the morning after they've glanced over SPC's outlook. I got the honor yesterday, Michael kicked our butts this morning. What does it all really mean; we're chasing this weekend.

Friday, which at my glance of the models yesterday, was looking iffy, has sprung back into the picture and at this point in time has become a legitimate chase day. This bumps my escape plans up by a day, but I shouldn't have any major issues with that. I think the biggest question will be who will I be riding with on this trip. I'm more likely to get out of my very few Friday obligations before I figure out who my dogz are going to be (yes, I just said DOGZ, just making sure you know I'm a nerd).

As usual, stay tuned! I'm hopeful to have Friday cleared by the time I go home this evening, in which case will mean tomorrow evening will be a get ready day assuming I don't get a jump start in the event Friday's target is well into South Dakota.

I will keep you posted!

Recovering from lsat night's incredible game today as I'm sitting here on campus dipping my toes into the seemingly endless amount of projects which will jam-pack my month. Taking a minute to write this as it looks as if I'll be chasing at least one day between Friday and Sunday this upcoming weekend. GFS has been showing a strong system pushing into the region for the last several days and today's 4-8 Day Outlook on SPC threw up Friday and Saturday as potential severe weather days. I went ahead and passed on Rockies tickets to free myself up this weekend for any potential which may exist. Right now, it looks like a pretty solid bet I'll be out as early as Friday afternoon pending a forecasted target. This far out, it looks close enough to home to where I can hit the road by noon and be in good shape. Obviously this would mean an overnight stay somewhere to chase again Saturday. Sunday isn't totally out of the question, but we may be in frontal-chase mode by then. Hard to say how that'll evolve, but its on the back end of this planned trip, so we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

So a chase is in the cards! Stay tuned through the week for more details as to when, what, and whom.
