I was probably one of only a small percentage of Denver-area residents to make it in to work on time. I woke up about 30 minutes early and was out the door in the same as it took me 35 minutes to cover what normally takes less than 20. The big question of the morning I think is where the hell was C-DOT?
Snow never really intensifed after last night's early dumping. My measurement at the apartment taken while my van was thawing out came to be 5 inches. We may see another inch or so before this system clears out, but current radar isn't hinting at much more than that. The Heavy Snow Warnings seemed more like window dressing than anything else as this storm completely threw all forecasters for a loop. I was disappointed when I peeked out my window at 6:15 this morning to see barely a little more than I went to bed with. The dynamics never really panned out for the metro area, which is sad considering what could've been with this storm. It was a tough one to call, and while it didn't go as planned, it looks like my original forecasted snow totals will hold. However, its an ugly victory considering how off I was on timing and how things would unfold. Certainly not a storm I'll remember as calling very well.
I'll post some pictures and a storm log for this system sometime Thursday or Friday after my Differential Equations exam. Mostly want to show the road conditions over the area as they were horrible all over the place. Not sure exactly what went wrong or who forgot to tell who, but none-the-less, drivers paid for it with conditions much worse than you would normally see for a storm like this.
Drive safe and be patient all!

Officially 3 inches at my apartment as of now. Snow Advisories were replaced with Heavy Snow Warnings with accumulations of 5 to 10 inches possible. This storm is becoming a big surprise due to the CSI which is creating pockets of heavy snow all over the place. The main trough is still to our west, so the best dynamics have yet to arrive. Snow should continue all night and into tomorrow with the chance that snow fall could continue well into the afternoon. This event has been more than difficult to forecast and its obvious with snow accumulations now already approaching the upper limits of my original prediction. Tomorrow is going to be interesting to say the least, so I'll definately be keeping a close eye on things.

A pair of vehicles slid out on Kipling just outside my apartment complex. Here are some low-light shots I took of the scene as a police officer arrived. The white car completely spun around facing south on the north-bound side. The minivan in the median was apparently going south and went out into the snow. Roads are very slick and icy as snow continues to call here in Lakewood at the time.

With a recent move and school in its home stretch, my website hasn't seen much in the way of action lately. However, a brutal winter blast is effecting Colorado bringing heavy snow to the mountains and snow and bitter cold to the front range and plains. Snow began to fall in the metro area as flurries early in the afternoon before becoming heavier in areas. Here at my new place in Lakewood, I have between 1 and 2 inches with snow still falling. Earlier advisories have bene upped to Winter Storm Warnings for the front range as snow amounts up there have already exceeded predicted totals. My original forecast was 3 to 6 with locally higher amounts due to CSI (conditional symmetric instability), and I'm thinking we should easily make the higher end of that range given snow already on the ground and falling. Temps will drop below zero tomorrow night after the storm clears out, and cold temps will linger into the weekend.
I'll make appropiate updates on the website this weekend with the snow storm log as I have a big Differential Equations exam on Thursday which has all my time at the moment. In the meantime, a couple long-exposure shots from my new apartment complex looking over Kipling with the light snow falling.
More tomorrow..

A couple quick things...
Since the launch of my videos hosted by google on November 10, I've had over 700 views of the 44 videos I have up thus far. I still have a few additions to make, but due to a move which kicks off tomorrow, I'll be a bit consumed with other things. Not to mention my internet not getting hooked up til Tuesday.
Also, the finals weeks of the semester are rolling in, so I'll be focused on completing classes and will probably be pretty sparce in website updates of any kind through then.
I've registered and reserved my room for the 2007 Storm Chasers Convention which is February 16-18. I've also received notice on the 2007 TESSA Convention which is held in March of 2007. I'll probably be making that trip to meet with some chasing buddies I get a chance to see once a year.
It looks like I'll be continuing my internship at Channel 7 through the Spring. I was invited to stay on through the next semester and happily accepted. Fortunately I was able to take care of my last elective in my Technical Communications degree with this second semester of interning.
Speaking of school, I thought it was worth giving everyone an update on what's left. My expected graduation remains Spring of 2008. I'm taking 13 credits in the coming Spring semester, then I'll have 10 in the fall and 6 during my last Spring. I've discussed the option of picking up a second minor in Physics seeing as I am only one class short of the requirements (Modern Physics). If I elect to go that route, I will probably pick up that class in Summer or Fall. Once I finish, I'll have a double major in Meteorology and Technical Communications with a minor in Math (and possibly Physics).

This week, I've neared completion of updating all my web videos. While YouTube proved to be well, with suggestion of Doug Kiesling, I transfered most of my videos over to Google Video. In doing so, I uploaded nearly 4 dozen tornado, hail, flood, and lightning video clips. I've also created pages for these videos to keep people in my own website. You can check out a few of those videos and pages using the links below...
July 2, 2006 - Denver, Colorado - Flooding
June 24, 2006 - Wheatridge, Colorado - Flooding
June 27, 2004 - Ken Caryl, Colorado - Flooding
May 5, 2006 - Seminole, Texas - Hail
April 29, 2003 - Commerce City, Colorado - Hail
May 29, 2004 - Conway Springs, Kansas - Tornado
May 12, 2004 - Medicine Lodge, Kansas - Tornado
You'll notice licensing info as well.. while I don't get a ton of video requests, it'll be nice to have that information available. I've also linked my chasing logs from the video pages as well so people can bounce back and forth with ease between the videos and chase logs. And of course, I've plugged the three affiliates I do most o fmy shooting for in Weather Paparrazi, Conus, and of course, the good folks locally here at KMGH Channel 7 Denver.
There are probably a few bad links as this was a tedious upgrade. It should be easier in the future as I won't be uploading more than a few videos at a time. I'll obviously link them from chasing logs as needed.
In other news, Denver set an all-time November high temperature on Wednesday was we beat the old record of 79 degrees. We hit 80 degrees just after 1pm; what made this awesome was my forecast the day before was for the record to be broekn with an 80 reading. This week, up til today's high, I had one of my best forecasting weeks since the start of my internship. I blew my high temps by shy of 20 today when the clouds never cleared! LOL

All my packages arrived this passed week including the 18 pounder which contained a pair of aluminum camera cases. One is dedicated to my video and photo equipment. It has stored in it both video cameras, both still cameras, the video camera lenses, batteries for all the cameras, and a small tupperware container which holds my rechargeable AA batteries as well as my extra SD cards.
The other case holds about a third of the total 8mm tapes I aquired in recent eBay auctions. It holds a total of 42 tapes as well as the chargers for the video cameras. This will be a nice convienience during Mayathon where I can store and carry with me all the tapes I could possibly need. This will also help organize my tapes while I am out so I can better file them later. The rest of my tapes will be tucked into storage as changed out as needed.
